The Floyd Mayweather Jr. dichotomy of Man-business or a great fighter?
I watched the 30 minutes promotional segment, just before the pay-per view television the Mayweather-Marquez fight. One clip shows an interview promoting Floyd – and he was quoted as saying: "If you do not watch a fight Floyd Mayweather, you Look fighting evil. "It This time, it occurred to me that Floyd was "evil"! It is more like in the other direction. A revised version of the Floyd quote should read: "If you look at a title =" Floyd Mayweather Jr. "> Floyd Mayweather fight, you look at fighting bad.
Floyd went out quickly and launched a shutout on Marquez in a landslide victory. Floyd put on a great performance comes from knowing layoff 21 months against a very good fighter book book Marquez. The question I asked myself after the battle was: Is Floyd want to be a great combatant or is it simply a business man? The answer is simple. He is a businessman who turned boxing prodigy talent who lives and breathes boxing at a price of flash, putting into play jet, talking jive "celebrity" persona. Some say that Floyd has just evolved and has become what it is. As a purist, I can do without it.
As a warrior elite and the book has long been the king book before his "retirement" in 2008, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has been a household name. When he retired, he was very similar to the screen goes blank on the final season Sopranos. We do not know how it ended, but anyway, we knew that there will be a final conclusion to the story.
He defeated Oscar De La Hoya in May 2007 and followed by a 10 round destruction of Ricky Hatton in December 2007. Before the fight Hatton in training camp, it appeared as a competitor on Dancing with the Stars. This helped him cross the public consciousness of non-boxing fans. Since La Hoya and Hatton fights were well on pay-per-view Floyd from thinking he was the reason that the fighting has several pay-per-view buys. And why would he do that? It is the hunter's most talented and highly Skilled in the world and has never been beaten.
The reality was that, as Bernard Hopkins, his fights are based on skills, experience, defense, and he plays safe. Certainly not a pleasant style crowd. Its pay-per-view success has been based about Oscar and Ricky's fan base – and many boxing fans just wanted to see lose. He left the sport on top, but for most fans, a legacy incomplete. Now he is back, and we hope he can cement his legacy.
Do not get me wrong, as a boxing purist, I think Floyd is amazing. I'm not here to denigrate his ability. It is the most qualified fighter in the sport of boxing, and also the smartest fighter in the ring today. The problem is that the purists can appreciate a fighter like Floyd. The accuracy, speed, defense almost impregnable, the great endurance and footwork and beautiful foot speed allows him to avoid punches. The average fan who watches a fight here and there sometimes would say it is boring to watch. I would be hard to disagree with them.
Why did he not press Mark and stop him? Why did he not turn it up a notch and pour it over the fight Oscar? Simply, why can not it be more exciting? During these major pay per view events, the world is watching.
The answer is that in the ring, he is pure talent, skill, and defense. Half middleweight it shows very little offense, but he throws very accurate and effective punches. It is rare that you see a combination lifted. His expertise and talent do not speak, and nobody can talk to him in doing otherwise. He just simply does not take risks that provide the fireworks that fans want to see.
Outside the ring, he thinks he is a star. A must see fighter that everyone is forced to watch. It that the fighting will have the lowest risk and highest reward. I know that boxing is a business, but if you fight just for money and fair support your image of "money", it removes the credibility and luster of your heritage.
Floyd has not always been so, however. I first remember watching Floyd beat Genaro "Chicanito" Hernandez in the fall of 1998 for the belt WBC super featherweight. It was clear Floyd have all the ability in the world with extreme speed and fluidity that it was really fun to watch.
When Floyd was only 21 years. He had just won his first title. His father Floyd Sr., was a professional boxer who fought Sugar Ray Leonard in 1978. Uncles were professional fighters as well. Roger "The Black Mamba" Mayweather, Jeff Mayweather. Roger was an elite fighter in the years 1980 and 90 who had fought Hall of Fame fighters such as Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker. Jeff has been a perennial lightweight fighter who fought Oscar De La Hoya in 1993. At that time, I was convinced he had everything he needed to be an all time great fighter. He had the name Mayweather – Boxing was in his genes. His future seemed bright and I was very pleased that a fighter has come along to my fellow favorite hunting all time, Sugar Ray Leonard.
Floyd has made good use of his talents and took on all comers in the super lightweight from 1998 to 2001, defending Title 8 times with impressive wins over Diego Corrales, Angel Manfredy, and Jesus Chavez. Floyd was the best of it during this period. At 130 pounds, he power and let go his hands. The fighter Corrales sparkling overwhelm with speed and power and knocked down five times before Corrales corner "threw the towel after 10 rounds. Corrales was the best fighter in the junior lightweight contest the Pretty " Boy. "Walked across Floyd him like a hot knife through butter.
As good as Mayweather goods "> Floyd Mayweather Jr. was, he did not have much of a fan base. It was probably the most gifted fighter in the world since the Roy Jones Jr. His talent was revered in the worlds of boxing. Purists respected his talent and dedication to be a great fighter, but he was not a household name. It has moved to light in 2002 and have Jose Luis Castillo fought and won a controversial decision by unanimity. Floyd fight Castillo again in a rematch and win a decision unanimous comfortable. He showed the fans that the first fight that many felt he had lost, was an aberration due to the Floyd fight with great pain in his hands. Even with these victories in the difficult and dangerous lightweight champion Castillo, his first two fights at lightweight, Floyd has not won over the fans. In fact, Floyd was not the title A pay per view event until June 2005, against the end of Arturo Gatti in the ninth year As a professional boxer.
It took the fight De La Hoya's head of Floyd has really started to grow. He was honored nationally since it was the fight against the cash cow that was Oscar De La Hoya. A new series on HBO, 24 / 7, with a profile of each combatant in the camp and privacy leading to the fight. Floyd knew he was a great fighter, but he never had the status of Oscar De La Hoya or Sugar Ray Leonard. It was his time to get the camera time. To be in living rooms across America regularly month before the fight. Floyd has been shown with diamonds, jewelry, his car, his house, his entourage, which included rapper 50 Cent and his personal barber. It was then that the image of Floyd "Money" was born and then he changed his boxing nickname "Pretty Boy" to "Money". Fighting ended up being a split decision victory for Floyd and sold 2.4 million pay per view buys. Floyd would have earned about 25 million dollars a fight. Man had money of his enormous salary. Its too bad the payday has been established with his skills outside the ring and not inside ring. The fight has not lived up to the hype and the majority of pay per view buys were caused by fans of Oscar.
It is not too late for Floyd, however. He still can get his inheritance. With impressive wins over Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley, it might be considered one of the best fighters ever.
Maybe one day we can think potential of these fights by watching "The Tale Mayweather vs Pacquiao on HBO and" The Tale of Mayweather vs. Cotto. We hope that the fighting will be realized. In addition, hope someone like Pacquiao or Cotto Floyd can press in a memorable battle similar to Leonard vs. Hearns I or Chavez vs. Taylor I Come on Floyd, forget the "money" persona and give us some legendary battles to remember.
