How do I learn to jazz improvise on piano?

I have been taking classical piano lessons for five years and my friends want me to learn how to improv on the piano. I know the blues scales and pentatonic scales, but I really want to know where to start.

The main thing is to listen to and transcribe solos from various jazz musicians regardless of instrument. Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, et al. Transcription will train your ears and it will help immensely with phrasing. Although you would not want to “steal” licks, learning lines from the masters is invaluable.

-Learn all of your modes which you may already be familiar with.

-Learn to use guide tones (3rd’s and 7th’s) as a foundation for your solos.

-Learn all your arpeggios in relation to the chords.

-Learn to use approach notes.

Of course, this is a big task that you are undertaking so you may also want to find a good teacher.
