If people complain when movies differ from the novel, why does Hollywood still change the stories?
I’ve never heard anyone praise a change in storyline from book to movie, even people who don’t like to read complain about them, so why does Hollywood still change storylines?
I don’t mean just shortening it, I mean like when they change something so drastically that it’s almost a different story or has a totally different outcome.
It would be too long to fit into the time allowed that the movie runs. Books have more room so to speak to be more detailed such as going into why a certain character is so insane;a book can explain his/her childhood in a few chapters or why a character is so guarded;a book can explain the character’s bad marriage in several chapters.
Hollywood is going after a certain demographic and those who will most likely read the book might not be a part of the demographic that would see the movie.
Also, sorry to say but a lot of movies have been “dumbed down” so they can make a quick buck at the box office. A lot of times the book is way deeper than the movie.
For example, if you watch the movie White Oleander(which was good) they leave a whole lot of info out of the movie. The main character in the book goes through about 5 or 6 foster homes in the book. In a few of those foster homes bad things happen to her-I know getting shot is pretty bad lol but she goes through things that are almost as bad as that. Yet the movie only shows Astrid in the foster homes with Robin Wright Penn,Renee Zelwegger, and the Russian lady.
