As I sat on the couch the other day after a long day at work, I was confronted with the inescapable truth that I am a fan of the BBC's TopGear. This admission may seem a bit odd for a young woman with zero interest in cars. For example, it certainly can not be considered clients of the program. I'm not a prepubescent child with too many grains and an abiding passion for the Lamborghini and more. Furthermore, despite what others may say, I do not think Richard Hammond attractive in the least, is one of the children referred with grain. Rather, TopGear has struck a chord with me, and probably many other viewers GEARBOX, because it is fun and often involves independent, budget adventure travel.
The thing is that nobody wants to have a travel experience more passive. A Unlike our parents, whose sum total of the globe-trekking was visiting Paris twice in his life, not merely sit on the sidelines and let things happen to us. We do not want be a passenger on the bus tour, seeing everything through a glass window, protected, sealed off in quarantine. We do not want our every move dictated to we. I came to this exercise for years, some of my best travel experiences involving rent bicycles or scooters and heading off into The Wild Blue Yonder, with only a Let's Go or Lonely Planet guide in hand. I had a battered station wagon in New Zealand who lived outside of the months. I drove Land Rover, both in Patagonia Tanzania (however briefly.) I now drive across the country a number of times for movements involving those devices bicoastal Uhaul cowards. However, even that has been fun. Having your own personal transport gives an unparalleled dimension of freedom to one trip. And the great secret is not necessarily outside its budget, even if you're a starving like me. In fact, transit staff is the new "must have" accessory for the modern "FLASHPACKER.
TopGear has noticed this, and turned his car program in a car and a travel program. One of my favorite episodes involved his attempt to buy cheap, Second-hand motorcycles and travel south to northern Vietnam in less than two weeks. There were a number of accidents, but nobody died. Injuries are part of the experience. Del Similarly, the fellows have achieved cheap car and driven across Namibia, the last rally-cross conduction in Scandinavia, and even embarked on a odyssey of the South American trucks and muscle cars of old.
The British TV is not alone in realizing that this travel madness, however. Ewan McGregor and his friend went around the world on their bikes, get a TV show and a book of it. I recently learned about the Mongol Rally, where you drive a sub-$ 1000, small engine vehicles from London to Mongolia. This is the real adventure into the heart of the matter, far tourists bus zone, and outside of your own comfort. We are all becoming independent tour operators, responsible only to ourselves and our blogging community. And although he probably is not sustainable or ecological sure is fun.
